"Wh... wha..."
Cecil gasped, a cup of coffee spilled all over the floor was still warm. Howard was standing in front of a wide variety of tools. One of which was a leather holder full of syringes. It was unclear what was in them but it was definitely not anything benign.
"Hm?"
Howard turned around and gave the dying man a gentle smile.
"What is wrong with you? You're dying. Sorry, I under-dosed you. It was supposed to be relatively quick. That or Cupcake didn't dose the cyanide as high as I told her to."
He shrugged.
"Doesn't matter, I guess. You're probably at a point where my voice is nothing but noise. Yup, you're blacking out. It'll be over soon, okay?... Cecil?... You still there, buddy? No? Okay."
Howard sighed. Cecil could have been so useful when they took this place but he was just too quick to catch on. He went back to his gear and continued to set it up. He decided that less weapons the better. He'll need to act too quick then act unprepared like the rest of the city when shit hits the fan. He took a small derringer and put on his own fashioned silencer. The gun only offered two rounds a clip but it was 100% silent and just as deadly as any other gun. The clip was horrid but he didn't plan on being discovered.

"Woah honey. I merely wanted to show you a bit of hospitality."
"You mean..."
"You're barking up the wrong tree, okay?"
Offended, the guard left the restaurant table and walked off, leaving a very bewildered Meryl.
"That... What?"
Having failed she decided to leave. It appeared the town had a currency system consisting of bottle caps... from bottles... Despite the ridiculousness, Meryl didn't have to worry about paying for lunch as the not-so-straight guard had already paid. She had to try again. Her best bet would be to find where the guards bunk. It didn't take long for her to see one leaving a room with a bag and a tan ARC cap on his head. She didn't need the info now. If she could just get him alone and kick his ass quickly, she'll have what she needs.
"Excuse me?"
"Yeah- Oh."
The man's face turned grim, Meryl couldn't figure why.
"Someone is sick. I saw them in the alley over there, I think they may be infected."
"Nobody is infected."
The guard grunted.
"What? Yes, I'm pretty sure."
"No, there is nobody infected over there."
The guard locked his door with a smooth move of his wrist. Meryl thought of what to say, she didn't expect him to be so difficult. Before she could think of anything the guard spoke up again.
"I really must go. You should find someone else to ambush, excuse me."
He pushed passed her gently and walked off. Angry from her horrible luck, she decided she would just have to smash the grate and hope nobody notices until she was out of the vent system. She turned and started retracing her steps back to the building they processed everyone.

"But-"
Six was cut off as Vanessa turned and said he hadn't run into that kind of protocol then she thanked... him?
"Wha...?"
The boy's companion walked up and slapped the boy's shoulder.
"Now that was a polite way ta say 'piss off, kid'."
Six grunted and looked up at him.
"I keep fuckin' up. I was actually nice that time!"
"Tryin' ta get her to fuck yo small ass isn't nice, dipshit."
"But I said it really nicely, Zero. It's that shit ass prick she with."
The boy looked out to where the girl and the guy were. They were talking to a security guard, sort of. Six clapped his hands once as he had got an idea.
"I got it!"
He bolted off. Zero, not wanting the boy to be let out of his sight, followed quickly after. It was clear that they'd be back to pester again. Kuse, watching the whole scene, sighed. He wasn't the best person to admit it, but it was refreshing to see some personality again, even if it was horrible and misplaced. Kuse walked up to Kendall and Vanessa.
"Perhaps the paperwork can wait."
He gave a glance to Kendall. The comment the man made earlier to him didn't effect the apache much. Jealousy just wasn't in Kuse's genes, at least, that's what he convinced himself.
"Maybe we should focus on where we will go next and see to getting our equipment back."
He was speaking directly to Vanessa now, Kendall and the other two didn't matter now. Vanessa went on this journey despite not wanting to. If she wants to continue with them then he will follow but he figured that she was satisfied with her "good deed".

The quarantine door slid open and Howard stepped. He adjusted his bag of gear and smiled at Amanda.
"Well Miss Masters. I decided to stop by before I got to work. I have about 10 minutes. Last time I was in here, I spoke. I'll give you a chance now. If you have any questions that can help... ease what will happen, please feel free to ask. However, I'll say that some things I cannot answer yet. Also know that nobody listening... Or watching. Nobody knows I'm here."
He gave another smile.
"So?"
She asked about the body count of what's to come.
"Current projections estimates roughly thirty to forty."
She then asked his method of disposal. He nodded.
"About 20 of them will be intentionally infected with the t-virus then killed with cyanide to hasten the infection cycle and avoid the victims being quarantined before death. The rest of the projected victims will be as a result of other methods of sabotage. The 20 from before will play as an attack. We're going to shut down the defense grid completely and open the gate, as well. Allowing what we can in. We also plan on releasing three alpha-series hunters."
She then asked the question he knew she would ask: who did he work for.
"I work with a particular group of people who are willing to do what's necessary for this world. If you haven't already guessed it, it will become very apparent to you soon. At the moment, though, telling you wont be useful."
He looked at his watch. A few more minutes. He heard her say that doing what is necessary frightens most people.
"That's very true, it even frightens me. The world is dying. ARC is dead. People are giving up simply because they're not willing to do what is necessary. We don't expect people to want to do it, we don't want people to do it. We just want them to sit in their comfortable home, oblivious to us doing what frightens them. That's why ARC needed you, that's why ARC is dead. They were too open and-"
Beep beep. His watch was shouting at him now.
"And there was too much infighting and... ugh."
He hit the button to stop the beeping.
"We can continue this after. We'll be back for you, soon. I'd also suggest that you stay here, you're in no state to fight and I will offer you a purpose. See you soon."
He smiled gently at her again then turned and left. He wasn't sure it went well but it didn't matter. He knew people like her, he knew what she wanted, he had what she wanted. It was about time to commence the operation.
