"Shifts? Nope...I'm done with my shift... Unless someone calls 911 and directs me to this place, then I'll come while I'm on my shift." Karin carried the bags in and put down the bags on a table top. She laughed at the sound of Al yelping and then when he waved. "Lunch? Dinner? Ha! Are you kidding me? You don't need to repay...I do this because I love to cook and people like that, cook so much that we can't fit it into our refrigerators...and who else am I to give it too...? Friends!"
"Krrrbbzzzztt...." Her radio began to give out static filled messages and the volume was rising. "What's happening?" She asked, gently lowering the volume. "Bzzzzzzzzzzttttttt!" The volume continued to rise, despite her attempts to lower it. "Defective equipment..." She muttered, quickly unclipping it from her shirt and turning to Carmen. She accidently dropped the broken radio and sighed. Karin bent over to pick it up, but at that moment the coffee maker began to malfuction and the lights blinked on and off. Simultaneously, the lights exploded, the player exploded and even the coffee makers blew up. Everything was happening too fast for her to act on time, and before she knew it, her own radio exploded.
"AH!" She screamed and then cursed, dropping on her knees and holding her right hand. Her right hand was still intact, but it was covered the red, sticky substance, called blood, so she couldn't tell much. The woman sat there, cradling her injured hand, and then quickly undid her belt. She pulled it off, and backed away from it, seeing that one of her supply pouches were engulfed in flames. Glass rained down on her, and only managed to give her a few cuts. "Fuck!" She shouted going over to the belt to put out the flames. She stomped it out, and grabbed the belt and quickly ran outside, worried about the people. Things were exploding everywhere, but the thing that scared her the most were the cars. The running cars exploded and became a heap of flaming metal and other cars were just in flames. "GET AWAY FROM THE CAR!" She shouted at the top of her lungs. "STAY AWAY!"
In the battle of being loudest, Karin had lost by a long shot and they couldn't hear her. "GET A-" She watched as person turned on a truck, and gasped. In less than five seconds, about 10 people were killed. If this was happening all over the town, then many people were dying. "God..." She closed her eyes and then opened them to look around. "These people are dying...and I don't think I can help." She stared a heap of flaming metal that rolled passed thes station before realizing something. She turned to the garage door and her eyes widened. "Carmen! Al! Get out of there now! The trucks could explode!"

Hitting a bunch of buttons the 47 year old waited for the signal. He waited a full 10 minutes before giving up. He threw the head phones as they banged against the side of the shuttle only to float. His partners were asleep, in deep sleep. He didn't know if he should wake them but decided not to. It was probably that he was over tired and saw things and command was having simple technical difficulties. The man ran a hand through his russian crew cut hair and sighed as he began to search for other signals.
Luckily Nathan took Bo places or Bo would've been lost. Even in the chaos that unfolded in his small hazel eyes he was still able to get around. He wasn't paying attention on anything else. He could hear someone screaming his brother's name. It took him a bit to realize that it was himself screaming "Nathan!! NATHAN!!" Over and over again among sobs. It felt longer than it had taken but he was running into the front of the high school where people were going chaotic. A few times one of the overpowering students knocked Bo over. One point a girl helped Bo back up but was quickly lost in the crowd. Bo himself was now lost, just frantically running through now-empty classrooms until he couldn't take the run any longer. Among pants and sobs he threw himself to his knees in utter defeat. Could Nathan had been just another one of those injured or dead? Bo couldn't keep the thoughts of his brother lying on the floor unmoving surrounded by all the penny-scented liquid. He grew hysterical.

Nathan then walked out of the classroom and then closed the door behind him. He looked up at the door number and then through the window, remembering its location. Maybe he had only taken five steps before the chaos started. The school lights began to blink on and off and computers were going through automatic shutdown. The sound of explosions echoed through the hallway and soon the whole highschool was blanketed in darkness. In the school hallways, it was absolutely frightening, not being able to see anything. As he ran around, he felt the glass crunch under his feet and he constantly bumped into something or someone.
He tripped once and turned to see who it was. His best friend, Scott, laid on the floor with his eyes wide open in shock. "Scott? Scott? Get up..." Nathan shook him and then turned him over, seeing the problem. The side of his head and his hand had been blown off, and this mad Nathan run away. "What the hell? What the hell is happening?" He asked running around, looking for a way out. The school seemed just about empty now, and he stopped running around. He entered an empty classroom and spotted a small, familiar face. "Bo!" He shouted, holding out his arms to embrace the little boy.
He didn't know what was happening, but he did know that it wasn't good. "Lets get outta here!"

Neither of them wanted to believe it, but the vehicles outside were exploding, why would their trucks be an exception? They ran from their cover, but Carmen stopped in front of the door. "Wait! Wh-what about chief? What about the others?" "We'll just need to hope for the best, just get everyone we can out first." Al simply responded, before pulling her out. A pair of fire extinguishers were up against the wall, and the male took them before he slammed the entrance door. They'd get a chance to help the people out in these cars...but they'd need to choose carefully, these only had so much of the foam, and they should only extinguish fires that were directly endangering people.
The two met up with Karin, and looked to her hand immediately. Since the fire crew was rarely called out, they both had cross-training as medics, so they could respond to medical emergencies. A correct tile for them would be Fire medics. "Karin, your hand...is it okay?" Al was watching the fires start up. "It's so hard to tell who is already dead and not...we might need some help for this."

Bo was promising himself that he wouldn't go to this high school. It was too confusing. He just sat on the floor sobbing, his brother was either another one of the hurt people on the ground or already gone, away from him. His brother would be at home right now, looking for Bo, or so Bo had thought. He wiped the salty tears from his eyes and stood up only to hear his name called out by a familiar voice. Bo turned and it was Nathan. The water works pumping again, Bo shoved himself into Nathan's arms. "Nathan!" He cried, but he tried to say something but they came out incoherently. As Nathan tried to move Bo wouldn't let him, Bo was stiff besides the trembling. "I'm.. Scared!" He managed to choke out, that would be the first time he said that today, and certainly not the last.

At this moment, she would have grabbed her radio and contacted other officers, but obviously that wasn't possible. "What could be causing this?" She asked calmly, despite her mental panic. She scanned the area and looked to flaming cars, and hurting people. "A terrorist attack?" She asked herself, trying to solve her questions and calm herself down. Karin stood there for moments, staring at the scene before her, while trying to collect all the details to make an answer that she could accept. But she couldn't.
Al and Carmen met up with her and she started to put on her belt again. She looked around once more and saw her frantic horse near the pole she tied the horse too. "Good..." She whispered, before hearing the two Fire Medics. "What?" Karin prepared to mask the pain and then turned to them. "I'm fine, but right now, its our duty to help these people...This wound won't kill me..." She paused, and bit her lip.
"It's so hard to tell who is already dead or not...we might need some help for this." She turned to Al and with her good hand, she pointed to the scene behind her. "If we're going to help people out, we're going to have to help people who we know are alive and will survive what ever is to come after this." Karin turned away and looked at her hand to slowly unstrap what was left of her fingerless glove. "Ow..." She said quietly through clenched teeth. "Shit..." She muttered looking at her hand. It hurt too much to get the glove off and to her it seemed like the glove had been glued to her skin because of the explosion. Karin bit her lip again and stopped herself from crying or anything that could show her pain. She believed that right now wasn't the time for her to be crying for a small injury.
"Nathan!" Bo shouted, and Nathan wrapped his arms around him in a tight hug. His little brother trembled in fear and he hugged the little boy tighter. "I'm...Scared!" The little boy choked out and he nodded. "Don't worry. You're big brother is here and I'll protect you...Let's get out of here..." He carried Bo, despite the fact that the little boy was trying to make it hard for him. He carried Bo out of the schol, and let his kid brother cry on shoulder.
"Oh my god," were the first words that excaped from his mouth, when he saw the chaos and destruction outside. "Bo...It's ok...We'll get through this..." He said, unsure of what to do. People were dead and he was stuck in a place, he never thought would become his world. The world in front of him had replaced the once peaceful town and everything seemed to just disappear. "We'll get through this buddy."

"Well...I think it is safe to say no one is alive out here...I'm afraid to say.." Al said, his gaze drifted off to the two schools nearby. A high school and an elementary school. "The schools...they should be doing their fire evacuation, but no ones left and it's been well over ten minutes. Carmen, we should get the rest of our suits on, and see if anything is wrong." He made sure to tell Karin that firefighters were known to get fully equipped and out the door in under a minute when responding to an emergency. They went quickly back into the fire station, and to their equipment lockers. Thankfully it was morning, so they could well. First on was the white fire resistant vest, then the fireproof cowl. The famous hat which, in this case was black and yellow, to match the rest of their suits, followed by the heavy black and yellow coat. Last and most important, their air tanks and masks. Before leaving, Al yanked the fire ax from it's holder on the truck. It took them maybe twenty-five seconds to do this, and all this equipment easily weighed sixty pounds. It seemed unnecessary to get fully equipped, but due to explosions, it was best they came prepared for fires. Armed with the fire extinguishers, Al started off for the high school, while Carmen went to check on Karin. "Please, don't strain yourself, I'll have a look at your hand when we're done here...I'm not sure you should come in with one of us without proper gear...but...we're the only ones here who can help. I'll let you decide what you want to do..." Carmen flipped around, and began for the elementary school, going as fast as she could with this equipment on.

"I'm an officer, Carmen, not a fire fighter...Even if I had the time to put on the equipment, I wouldn't be able to actually put it on right..." Karin knew of the dangers and knew that she could be killed, but she decided that she didn't have enough time to change or figure out how to properly put on the equipment. People could be dying right now, and if that was the case, then she had no time to lose.
She turned her horse and tried to calm it down, before riding her. The beast kicked and neighed, but she managed to avoid the death by a horse. She got onto the horse and followed after the two. "Carmen, check the highschool...Maybe both of you should... I'll look around the town for survivors and check the elementary school. It'll be easier that way if we split up...and I don't think the elementary school should be so bad." She said to them, before having her horse speed up its pace.
It was strange. The school's fire alarm didn't sound, and she didn't seem to hear any cries for help. It was too quiet for her comfort, and out of habit, she took her gun out of the holster, remembering the punks that destroyed her bike. "Bad things happened when it is quiet..." She jumped off and tied her horse nearby, before going to the elementary main entrance. "Ah...what a painful annoyance..." Karin muttered, looking at her hand. She was never good at saving people's lives when it came to wounds, but she did know that it helped if you put pressure or something. So she pulled out a handkerchief and tightly wrapped it around her hand. "Better..."
She pressed her back against the wall right next to the door, with the hand gun in her hands. "One, two, three!" At three, she kicked open a door, and looked inside, with her hands ready to shoot. Like what had happened at the fire station, the lights had exploded and glass was scattered all over the floor. "Hello? Is anyone here?" She called out to start her search for survivors.
His eyes looked around the area, and finally, he dropped Bo. Nathan walked onto the street and looked at the flaming cars. "Is this...Are we...Are we the only people alive?" He asked, remembering his dead friend's body. "What the hell happened? Why'd we get put through this?" He glanced back at Bo and then kicked a rock. "We've already lost our parents...what else are you going to take from us?" Nathan could only hear the sound of burning fire and nothing more.
"Bo, do you want to look around? We can stay here if you want..." He said, trying to hide his worry and fear. He gave out a smile, before looking around once more. He guessed that the whole city experienced the same thing and he hoped that people were ok. From the looks of it, all electronics and stuff like that were disabled and this scared Nathan. He had been born into a world of technology, and the technology was used to preform everyday tasks....

As per usual, students began filtering through the door, and the volume of the room grew to a dull roar. The other 20 students taking their respective seats, the usual chaos erupted. Nodding to Kay-Kay, Myles folded up the half-finished project and stuffed the paperboard into the second pocket of his backpack. half an hour passed with no eventful happenings. A Mexican in the back row ran earphones through his sleeve and semi-covertly blasted 50 Cent. Some other guys were calling dibs on the head cheerleader, some on the dance team's lead. A redhead started drawing out manga-style comics on spare paper. Some napped, some came and went. "Oh boy... I forgot to take attendance." Whelped Miss Berkowitz. "Bennett?" "Here." "Aiaia" "Yep." "Welsh?" "Went to the bathroom." "Sanders?" "NNNNYEEEEEEEAAAAHHH!" The nasely report echoed through the classroom, inciting laughter, high-fives, and the occasional "What the hell?". Kay-Kay leaned in during the commotion. "You got one?" "Yep. waited in line all night. Got it in stone." "Sweet! can I see?" "Sure." Myles reached down to his pockets, and not feeling the usual lump, searched at his feet. "Damn! I knew this would happen. These pockets are too damn shallow." "Looking for this nerdling?" A big, blonde pretty-boy jock in a red letter jacket shook around the grey device. "Damn it Terrell, give me my phone!" Myles said in a frenzied whisper. "Hmmm... nah. I want one of these." He began scrolling through the menus. "Hey! who's Martha? isn't that the lunch lady?" Myles lunged for the device, missed, and Terrell shoved it in his hip pocket. "Give me my-" "Excuse me, what's going on?" Miss Berkowitz was hovering above the Myles and Terrell. "Nothing at all." innocently whined the latter. The lights flickered. "I'm gonna go call the janitor. Stop roughhousing." "Miss Berkowitz? It's time to go ready for the news." "Go ahead Ca-" "-Kay. Thank you." Kay-Kay interjected. He walked through the now unlocked metal door, and it slammed to a shut behind him. "OW! What the fuck man? you screwing with my iPod?" the Mexican listening to music said. "Someone turned the volume up hella." he adjusted it and tried again, But it failed. The door opened, and the teacher walked in, muttering something about him not getting paid to deal with personal problems, and scanned the room. There were a few windows between the A.V. room and this one, and Myles could see Kay-Kay setting up an old news camera. There were also servers, old equipment, a row of desktops. The lights flashed off, but luckily they were a corner room, so there were windows a plenty. There was a small pop on the teacher's desk, followed by a fiery explosion. In slow motion. He looked as the teacher's face ceased to exist. Swiveling around, Terrell got up, but instantly collapsed as the small bomb in his pocket went off, effectively removing the leg. he turned to his side, and frisby-style, launched the palm-pilot through the air. The Mexican was hunched on the floor, grasping a hand that no longer existed. Everyone ran in slow motion through the door. He flipped to his left. The A.V. room engulfed itself in flame, shattering the windows. The metal door contained most of the explosion, but it did not hold back any real horrors. The charred remains of a beloved friend flew towards the window, his height forcing him to snap in half, and landed on Myles. He Opened his mouth to scream, and his lungs filled with soot and burnt flesh. The cars outside exploded in one destructive mushroom cloud, the shockwave shattering the panes of glass. Some people stuck trying to get through the door were taken to the ground in horror, shattered ribs, and bleeding ears. The unlucky ones caught the glass darts and struck the earth, inches from freedom. faces frozen in shock and horror. Myles was sure they were still screaming. Mouths wide open, a trickle of crimson running down their cheeks. His own blood from ruptured eardrums stopped any sound that might have come. The room was red. Fire was spreading to the carpet. He pushed the grotesquely mutilated remains of a brother fate forgot to give aside and got to his feet. He jumped on a desk and climbed through a window, gouging parallel lines through his stomach. The grass cool and soft.

"I still don't think it's good idea though...agh! Karin, wait!" Carmen groaned as she followed behind. She was going to have a look at the elementary school as well. Karin may have been convinced that it was fine, but Carmen wasn't going to let it slip by so easily. Several things could flammable in there, and she wasn't going to let them burn while small children in there. She entered the building a short time after Karin had, and put her hand on her shoulder. She probably had her jump, due to the fact her gun was out. "Hey, easy. I thought this was a rescue operation, not a hostage situation. Come on. I might need your help opening some of these doors. She cursed the fact that the L-shaped clip light on her jacket wasn't operable, for it was kind of dim in here. "Wish I had a glowstick or something." She said aloud, trying the door next to the one Karin had broken open. "Anyone in there?!" She called from her side. "Shout if you can hear me!"
Meanwhile, Al was busy with the front doors of the high school. They were of that metal and wood design, so it was taking a while to hack away at. Eventually, it was bokren up enough that he could pull one open, much to the happiness of the small group of people who had wisely ran. "Stay at the bottom of the stairs, and please stay away from anything on fire down there." He was about to go in, when he heard one of the teenagers say something. "I'm scared...I-I'm gonna call my parents!" He took his cellphone out, and held the power button. "Wait, don't!" Al tried to intervene, but it was too late. The cellphone became a fireball the second "Hello moto!" was said. The teen did not suffer...well not long, as shards of the cellphone went through his eye, and lodged themselves into his brain. That's what he gets for having a RAZR. This caused a panic among ther other evacuees, and they began to run around. "Just calm...wait, everyone...just---GRR!" He gave up, and entered the school, seeing his action would be futile here.

Bo was reluctantly placed to the ground. His legs already felt like rubber from the fear and fatigue he had sprinting those couple blocks. Then another explosion came from behind them, a small one though. Bo found himself once again clinging to Nathan. The sound of people erupted from the high school. The streets seemed empty though. Just traces of blood and nothing else.

She turned around quickly and looked at Carmen. Karin would have probably twisted Carmen's arm around or something, but she figured that it was the woman, from the heaviness of her gloved hand and gave out a sigh. "It's creepy being in the dark..." She said, a little while after. "Hey, easy. I thought this was a rescue operation, not a hostage situation. Come on. I might need your help opening some of these doors." Karin nodded, but still kept her gun out. "You never know...anything can happen and guns may be able to protect us from stuff." She walked over to a door and ran the back of her hand against thedoorknob, checking for heat. When she found that it was clearshe slowly turned the doorknob and peeked through the partially opened door. The room seemed alright. She pushed the door open and looked around the office. "Christ..." The school's principal sat in his olive green office chair, in his perfect black suit, while holding a gray mug with reddish coffee and only what the heavens knew. Everything in the room seemed pretty normal. That is if you ignored the indistinguishable face the Principal had, or the melted skin that stuck to his neatly ironed shirt. "Poor...guy..."
Karin closed the door and backed away from it. "Carmen, I'm going to look around elsewhere...you can look around here." She told her friend, before walking to another hallway. She passed two large doors that led to the library and stopped, hearing something. She listened closely and heard muffled screams coming from the other side of the library doors. Karin attempted to open the doors, but she found that they were blocked from the other side. She tried to push open the door, then kick it, and then she finally tackled the door.
Her tackles were seemingly unsuccessful and only managed to bruise her arm.She tried once more and pushed one of the doors with all the strength she had. The door slowly opened and she secretly cheered. Karin could hear the voices of the trapped people clearly now, and she shouted back to them. "I'm coming! Hold on!" When the door opened more, black smoke clouds exited the room and a full blast of heat hit her. The library was burning up in flames. In her book, starting a fire in the library was never a good thing, and that was why they had the no smoking signs all over the library. "Carmen! I found people! We have to help them out!"
Karin was ready to jump into the room and help the kids out, even if she could burn up and die. She was a police officer and she became an officer to be a help to people. She was the one who put all the bad guys in jail and saved the people. Maybe she didn't protect people from fires, but she wanted to be a help. And right now, it seemed that no one else was going to come and do this. It seemed that the other people were gone. "Carmen! Hurry up! I don't know if I can enter the room!"

Carmen showed her comply by nodding, and let Karin do her own thing, then she wandered off, leaving Carmen alone. "Is anyone in there?" She called again, this time, checking if the door was lock or stuck. Neither. She twisted the knob, and opened the door slowly. It was a normal class room. A fire was at the end of the other room, so the blackish haze that was the smoke was clouding much visibility. Carmen took two steps in, when she felt something under her boot. It was hard...yet had a squishy feeling. She looked down...it was a child's hand. "My god..." She wanted to put her hand over her mouth to comfort herself, but she couldn't go all the way, and let it simply rest on the respirator of her mask. "I can't believe I'm seeing something like this." her slightly distorted voice let out from behind her mask. It was obvious no one was alive in this room. She began to back, when she heard Karin call from the distance. "Karin! I'm coming, hold on!!" She shouted as loud as she could, hoping it wouldn't be drowned out by the blaze. Karin called again. "Please, hold on! I'm almost there." The black smoke began to twist into the hallway she had just turned. She knew where to go, and she came up behind Karin not a few moments later. "Stand back." She said sternly. "Let me handle this." She held the extinguisher forward, and was startled by how big the fire actually was. "They could be anywhere over there...I can't see them. Trying to clear the entire fire would be a waste of time..." Carmen cupped her free hand over the respirator on her mask. "Anyone alive out there?! Shout back if you can hear me! Can you tell me where you are?!"

"Hurry! The teacher's legs are burning! Help us! Help us!" The children shouted and Karin shook her head. "Left side or right side?!" She shouted. "Right side!" "Near the door or far?!" Karin shouted and waited for their replies. "Far!! AH! It's coming closer!" "Stop, drop and roll! Corner?! Is it a corner or in the middle?! Where are you?! Come on, hunny, reply...We're going to get to you!" Karin looked around and finally they replied. "We're in a corner and we can't get out! The fires blocking the way!" She looked to Carmen and smiled. "Carmen, make it out with those kids...I'm going to try something..."
She quickly left Carmen and ran down the hallway to her right. She stopped at a door and kicked it open. "Fire extinguisher. Fire Extinguisher. Where is it?" She searched the classroom and ignored the body parts. Finally she picked up the red container and ran out the room. Karin carried the heavy extinguisher around with her and when she found a window she used it to break it open. "I would be arrested for this, but I won't get caught..." She stepped through the window and ran past windows, looking through them for the library.

Just as tides wash away all traces of anything on a beach, Myles' eyes closed, and for but a moment, he was in the big annual science fair, only a few days from where he lay now. The judges were smiling and shaking his hand. One's bare head gleamed in the harsh lighting of the gym. Another was nearly prancing towards his booth. Myles had on his nicest pair of shoes, rich brown and radiating. Amid the sea of baking-soda volcanoes and "light vs. no light in sunflowers" booths, his had to be pretty extraordinary, right? For the life of him, he couldn't remember what it was. He looked to his booth a few feet behind him, and before a glimpse of the miraculous machine could be caught, it began to melt. Above it stood the very papers they had worked on in A.v., accompanied by a third piece, but the title wiped itself off the paper, hit the ground, and disintegrated before his eyes. It was a murky puddle on a table now. Everyone else's was fine. The award went to Randy Miller, who judged what paper towels were strongest when wet. He pulled out a phone from his pocket, and it joined the lettering in dust. His clothes disappeared, and he was immediately confronted by the principal. "What are you doing?" "I don't know!" "what's your name, son?" " I- I- I-" He brought his knuckle to his chin in thought. Why couldn't he remember his name? The bird-like figure of the prancing judge approached the group. "Says here he doesn't have a name. In fact, all of booth 19's line is blank." "That's right." The stocky figure of the assistant principal showed up. "He never had a file. We don't even have a birth certificate." "So, Nameless, why are you nude?" Myles tried to talk but he couldn't open his mouth. He looked in a mirror, and every one of his facial features melted away. With what was left of his ears, he heard Miss Berkowitz taunt "Poor nameless. You shouldn't even exist. We won't miss you. You never made the winning touchdown." and through what was left of his eyes he saw her jaw hanging to the rest of her face by a flap of cheek muscle, and a face as shapeless as Play-Doh. Eyes that could still see tore open, and ears that could still hear heard screams of horror. He was able to smell smoke again, and was able to taste copper. The grass was lukewarm, and flame billowed from the still shattered windows. a horse stood at the end of his sight. he couldn't see farther, he couldn't focus right now.
((mental breakdowns displayed through subliminal visual "plays" are the only way to go!))
