It's only been a couple days.. Who would've thought something so drastic could happen in a small backwater town like this? Everyone, myself included have felt there is only one safe haven in this town of death, the mall. It may have been a small town but it when it came to that mall it was famous. It's probably the only main shopping center in the whole town. Enough about that. We made it to the mall and successfully barred it up. We should be able to hold it here... There had to be at least 10 people in the same great hall of the mall with me. Not to mention the many more throughout the mall. I thought we could do this, until I began to notice the people start to lose hope, some even becoming desperate and selfish.. This wasn't going to be easy..
The long black haired man helped move yet another one of the mall's many benches to the glass where a horde of hungry undead screeched upon the holding glass. Most of the people were confident it would hold but there were many arguing, some trying to sleep, and others helping improve the defenses. Also one annoying old lady looking desperately calling "Madonna! Madonna!?" The 24 year old man walked up to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "Listen, you have to calm down. I don't know where your dog is." He said but she just shook her head. "I can't live without her!" The young man decided to give up as he went and relaxed on a wooden bench beside an arguing couple. There was also a few youngsters in here crying by what seemed to be a survivor caring for them. The red haired woman was quite kind, but would she really be able to protect them? The man only sighed.

"So this is it then..." A defeated saying came from the 28-year old woman. She was obviosuly of eastern origin, with the slightly tinted yellow skin, the slanted eyes, and the black hair that reached to her shoulders. "We stay here until we starve to death...I don't know how that justifies for being eaten alive...sounds just as painful." She studied the zombies outside. They were beating against the steel bars; biting at them, desperately, but futilely trying to get to them. She, along with an entire squad of riot police, came here to break up a riot...too late did they find out that this was no riot. Now this very same "riot" was out there, trying to get to them. And what did they have has a shield? A shutter of black steel, and a half-inch thick piece of glass.
She leaned upon one of the stone columns, placing her equipment on the ground near her; a riot police shield and the shocking prod. -Why prolong it?- She thought to herself. -We could die faster if we just let them in...- The particular old lady was also getting on her nerves, as it seemed everyone else's. "Someone needs to put that lady on a leash..." She said out loud and very coldly. "Or better yet, toss her outside. She could be a diversion. We might actually be productive."

Silence. No, dead silence, fell over a band of three survivors. As they gazed out the window, they finally took the full force of what just happened. they were huddled in a small circle in the middle of the room. On a normal day, this would be a bustling store, filled with people window-shopping earrings, necklaces, watches, and other material necessities. A dark-skinned man finally glanced around, and stood up. He was a born football player, all six-foot three of him shadowing the others in the group. He had a tree trunk of a neck, and the shoulders to match. why he joined the police instead of the draft still eluded him. his was-once-a-crew cut was disheveled now, a remnant of sanity, and his scarred face was graced with a twisted grimace. "What is it Eugene?" a tanned man asked. "I just realized something." "Care to share you're keen insights?" "Not with that tone, but I will for the girl." he looked at the third member, quiet, calm, and huddled into some kind of ball. "We need to get out of here," he stated matter-of-factly. "Or we're bound to just sit here and starve. that is, unless you wanna make use of the cashier?" The three looked around the counter at a petite woman in a half-eaten sweater-vest and slacks. Eugene walked over to the barricade and started dismantling the barrier. "There isn't any, uhhg, guarantee that all of us, arrg, will survive, but, nnng, it's worth a shot." he cast the display case aside, switching to the cashier. "She'll make excelent bait..." "Oh God, oh God, oh God..." the woman was muttering. "It's okay, Carly, we'll get through this." "Thanks, Brandon." she sniffeled. "Okay. on three, run as fast as you can for the food court." He swung the dead woman out into the mob" THREE!"

"Lana! Run, go! I'll be fine baby girl...I promise..." The man said, before turning back to the enemies in front of him. At this point, the girl had turned and ran, as quick as her legs could take her, toward the large mall. Three gunshots rang in the air and he muttered a word three times. The undead's hands grabbed hold onto him and began to push him to the ground. Although one of them had already sunk its teeth into his shoulder, he still managed to look up at his running wife and their dog. The last words that came out of his mouth was, "Dog, go! Go, Dog! Go with Mommy! She needs you more than I do! And make her happy...I bought you for her...I love her..I love her..."
"Hey baby...How are you, boy? Alecs, you good? Not even a scratch on you... Not even one r-right?" She asked the dog, while heading up the stairs. She bent down and hugged the big, furry dog. The dog licked her hands and they continued to walk up the steps. Being near the door and seeing all the dead-ish people made her nervous, so she decided to move up to the second floor. It seemed somewhat safer, or so she thought, to be on the second floor and because some old lady was looking for Madonna. The woman didn't really know why the lady would be looking for Madonna, or if Madonna was even alive. Lana thought that Madonna was a dead star or something.
She walked into an store and looked around, with her dog following. "If they break in...I should be ready. I wonder why I picked to go into a clothing store then... Ha ha. Isn't that funny, Alecs?" She turned to see her dog staring at itself in a mirror and she walked over to him. Lana looked into the mirror with her oceanic blue eyes and cocked her head to the side. "Hmm..." She said, as she tied up her long, wavy brown hair. "I...I'm cover in blood. I guess that's why I went into here, to get clothes, but I doubt it will be worth it. Alecs...let see if we can help the others..."
She looked down at her gray shirt and sighed at the blood stains. "Nothing else, but my husband's baggy blue jeans, and my old black tennis shoes..." Lana walked by a register and picked up a pair of scissors lying around. It probably wasn't much of a weapon, but it was better than just using your bare hands. Alecs lead her out of the store, sniffing the ground, and she sighed. She hadn't fed her baby. She moved over and patted the top of his head, before moving into another store and dragging out a wooden chair. "Hey baby boy, care to help me?" She asked to the dog, and he tilted his head to the side, not understanding. Lana gave a sad smile, and began to drag the chair toward the escalator.
Damn, this thing was heavy.

The man continued to watch the red head try to calm the two children. Sighing, the man stood to his feet and walked over and knelt by the three. "Carry right?" He asked the woman and she shook her head. "Natalie." She responded back, almost annoyed. "Sorry.." he said simply and looked to the kids. "They yours?" He asked and she shook her head. "No, they wont even talk... I didn't catch your name." She responded but quickly continued. "Danny? Jack?" The man chuckled. "No.. No.." He responded to both. "Eddy." He said and she just shrugged. "Madonna!!?" Another call echoed through the hall. "If those zombies don't kill us that blasted woman's voice will.." He growled and Natalie seemed to chuckle fakely. Suddenly a crash was heard as the old woman began moving the furniture and breaking their impenatrable barricade. "Da hell?" Eddy gasped in his deep masculine voice. "She's going to kill us all!" Natalie screamed, alerting the others. "MADONNA!!!" She screamed desperately as the dog could be heard barking from the outside. The undead didn't even seem interested in it. Suddenly it was too late, the zombies were now pouring inside, trying to take grabs at the people closest to the exit, already having consumed the woman and a security gaurd. Suddenly an african american man appeared on the second floor. "What the hell is going on!?" He gasped then he quickly beckoned his hand. "Come on everyone! Get up here! Come to the security room, quick!" He demanded...

The woman quickly scrambled to her feet, grabbing her equipment. First she did was duck behind the shield, holding back one of these zombies, as he tried to bite his way through it. But more joined in, some approaching from different angles. One from behind caught the woman on the shoulder with it's teeth, digging it in through the kevlar. But thankfully, only the kevlar, as she felt no skin contact. The endless torrent of rotting flesh finishing with the other bodies, she found it time to escape. Her free hand felt for the shock prod, and when it did, she jammed it into the head of the zombie behind her. She heard the surging of the electricity, and falling of his body. He was dead...again. Using as much strength as she could summon, she pushed the shield away, watching the zombies fall over, from the lack of resistance on metal object, and headed for the stairs, keeping up with the ones heading for the security room. "I'm all for the safety of animals, but not if it condems us to death!" She shouted aloud.

Eugene snagged a silver Rolex before leaving. watching the near-deads begin to devour the bait, the horrified captives lay paralyzed for a moment, before one of them got up and turned around, not being able to get a bite in edge-wise. "Time to go!" they all said at once, and took off sprinting through the passage. Eugene glanced behind him now and again, to make sure of his charges' safety. Brandon was doing fine, the surfing or whatever putting him in great shape. Carly was falling behind at each stride, however. "You can do it!" they both shouted "Only a bit farther!" Eugene coaxed. He was lying. Who knows where they are, or where they're heading. every once in a while he'd see signs of other survivors. barricaded doors, eyes gazing through windows. None of them would help though. this is a world in which mankind is insatiably greedy and limitlessly paranoid. he glanced back again, and was sickened at an old joke he always heard, "You don't have to out swim the shark, just make sure that you can out swim your friends before going in...", suddenly it had a real meaning. "It isn't t-" A bloodcurdling scream filled the air. glancing behind, he saw Carly get jumped on by some zombies that tripped their way over the planter. "Carly! No!" Brandon flung himself at the small group. "No! It's too late for her! keep running!" Brandon ignored these words and started beating off the undead with some clay pots. By now more were closing in. "I can't stay here! Either you leave her, or you die with her!" Brandon was panting some sort of cross between a prayer and a plea for the zombies' damnation. "I'm leaving. if you keep following that dream, kid, you'll probably die. But if you manage to survive, I will be in the food court. If we meet again, I'll be surprised like hell.." and Eugene ran off. Behind a small area fenced off with closing shutters, Some old lady was running around screaming "Madonna!". "She's not that good, damn..."

"What the hell is going on!?" A guy paused, looking down from the edge he shouted from. "Come on everyone! Get up here! Come to the security room, quick!" He demanded.
"Alecs!" Lana shouted. He barked at the monsters coming in from the entrance and at the woman's stupidity of opening a door to the undead. The large dog growled and bared his teeth, but she grabbed his collar and after he gave out a little yip, they ran. The dog ran behind her, as if guarding her from anything that could be following, and that made her feel a little bit safe. But below her, the first floor was already being filled by the undead and it wouldn't be long until they reached the second floor.
They had all walked in and filled the first floor. People were dying and she could hear their last screams. The monsters were almost as loud as the woman. They moaned and groaned. Hearing their voices frightened her, but made her run faster. "Oh God!" Lana shouted, looking behind her, seeing a few other survivors. The survivor count was even smaller now and she was even more afraid. Everyone was going to die. "Alecs, hurry up!" At this moment in time, all she wanted for Christmas, her birthday, or anything, was to live.

Eddy felt a small bit of fear as he noticed his only alternative safe haven was now blocked by at least 100 undead. He took a deep breath and was about to start his sprint through the things when a soft hand grasped his own large hand. He looked down to see it was Natalie. "Wait!" She called after him. She then bent down to pick up the little girl. "Get the boy, please!" She begged. Eddy quickly looked at the boy then his haven, then back at the boy again and sighed as he knelt down and took the boy in his arms. Grasping the boy firmly with his left arm, he picked up a baseball bat next to him with his right. Eddy and Natalie then began sprinting past the zombies, Natalie being close behind Eddy as he bashed them out of the way. It wasn't enough to kill them but it knocked them down giving valuable time. To both of their surprise they were both ascending the spiral staircase and continued with a few others into the security rooms. The zombies didn't seem to be following them up the stairs rather taking down the easy left overs on the 1st floor.

When the woman reached the top of the spiral staircase, she looked over the edge. It was a feeding frenzy down there, and it was just repulsive to watch. She gave herself a moment of breath, the equipment she was wearing was heavy, and besides, those ravenous eating machines seemed to be occupied with the poor stragglers down there, that they didn't bother heading up the stairs...yet. A quirked mouth formed on her face, as she remembered what she had said not five minutes ago. "Why prolong it..." Her wish had come true, but she wasn't going through with it. Perhaps there was a flicker of hope left in her still. Noticing she was being left behind, she quickly scrambled to her feet and entered the security rooms behind everyone else. "Well this is a most unfortunate setback..." She announced aloud. "But...what now?"

(note : events in this post proceeds John's ((next post)). )
"Damn it all!" he screamed as Eugene looked around helplessly. He went out into the park to save time, and got himself even more lost. he looked around and picked up a (conveniently) strewn about baseball bat under a tree. His handgun was empty long before this. "it's no hand-held nuke, but I guess it works... good thing I played Little League." walking in a straight line, and praying he ran into a door, he began mauling his way through the cool, grassy hell hole. Take this you SON OF A BITCH!" he swung at popped a head, creating a personal fireworks display with the subsequent gore. After seemingly hours of praying not to get hurt, he made it to the opposite wall. "mother fu- what's going on?" An African American came striding toward him. "Brothuh, what's goin' on?" he merely jogged past him and brandished a small firearm. "can you at least tell me where the food-" he walked through the glass doors and disappeared. "Shit.." choosing not to enter an area that needed a gun, with a bat, he continued to follow the wall, until he could step inside. he found a good spot to sit down and thought. About Brandon and Carly, about the security officer, about his next move, about what he wished he'd said before he left. Some guy with a camera walked up and stared at him for a moment. "You need a safe place to stay?" "what do i care..." "Just come with me." "'Aight, 'aight..." The new guy led him through a bunch of air vents and eventually they both popped out in a security room. "I never caught your name." "Frank." "Eugene. Nice to meet you."

Lana sat on the floor, quietly scratchin the back of Alecs' ears. She glanced at the cop woman and then turned back to her dog. Most people were afraid of Doberman dogs and earlier people told her to take Alecs away from them. That's why she had sat on the steps and held him back from going back down the stairs to bark at the undead and further scaring people. Alecs was a black and brown doberman and she loved him very much. He was a nice dog and she had him ever since he was a puppy. He protected her ever since then.
"I don't know...." Lana said, without turning to look up at the police woman. "...I wish I did...but I don't know..." Alecs went over and rested his head on her shoulder, making her smile. "It's alright baby boy...We'll find a way to get through this together." He then jumped up and ran into another room. "We should look for food and stuff, huh? But it won't be safe to go out there again...I got scissors, but I doubt that will help anyone." She placed the scissors she had picked up earlier on a chair and then followed Alecs in another room. "I hope everyone will be alright...Baby boy...I hope the police woman gets through. She's saved a lot of people."
The dog barked and ran all over the place, making her smile. She searched around, while the Alecs ran around. "Does anyone know where a first aid kit is? We should be ready, just in case, we find anyone injured..." Before this whole thing happened, her husband worked at the hospital. He was the doctor and she was the trustworthy nurse. At first it was only a professional relationship, but then they got closer and soon got married. They didn't even have a kid.

Eddy had a bit of trouble putting the boy down as he was clinging frozen solid to him. He sighed. Natalie noticed this and, after placing the girl gently on the ground, she went over and assisted with the boy. "Thanks..." Eddy acknowledged her help reluctantly as he then turned to speak with the others. Natalie only nodded and went back to caring for the two, cradling them until they were calm. Suddenly a sound of a blow torch and next thing they knew the security room was being sealed by an elderly african american security gaurd. The one who had originally announced everyone to get up to the security room seemed preoccupied with a vent. When the man had opened it suddenly some people came out. It startled the man but he quickly noticed they were human. "So it works..." He mumbled then just entered the vent quietly.
Eddy shook his head and decided to mumble aloud. "We need food... And weapons.." He said mostly to himself but enough for the others to hear. "I'm going to go get us some weapons.." He said then followed the man into the vents, not only out of duty but also curiosity. 'Hardware store and gunshop on North Plaza, I think I'll head there.' He thought to himself as he continued through the easy squeeze of the vents, following close behind the other man.
When the kids were finally calm Natalie looked around the room. A cop, some woman, two new arrivals, some woman who looked like a secretary at first glance, an elderly security gaurd, and a dog. She gasped, a dog! "Look!" She gasped at the kids. "A doggy! Wanna go pet it." She said trying to lighten the mood but without success. The kids were still too shaken.

The woman was quick to enter the discussion of weapons. Being equipped for riot suppression, she had more equipment than she would be just out on patrol. Unfortunately, these were merely suppression weapons, hardly meant to be lethal. "I have a few things I can share." She spoke up, and approached the security desk. First to come out was that yellow handgun shaped tazer, and she laid that on the desk. Then she reached for the shock baton on her belt and laid that beside the other. And finally, a magazine of rubber bullets, designed to fit a .9mm weapon. "You'll need to find a gun for, if anyone decides to take it. The other two aren't meant to kill, but if you tried hard enough, you could probably bludgeon someone with the baton." She had laid them there in a "first-come-first-serve" fashion. "By the way...My name is Carmen. Carmen Hu."
That's when the two men came in through the vent, and she shifted gaze to them. The white male was someone she'd never seen before, but she knew the African American man long before this. "Earl?" She said to him. Earl was a nickname she'd given him before. "Earl, is that you?"

"it's a little bit further." the stranger coaxed, "next right." he began to fiddle with a latch, and swung open a maintenance door. "The zombies haven't figured out how to get in here yet." On the other side of the hatch, a sparsely filled, drab gray room came to be. "Earl? Earl, is that you?" "Huh? Carmen? You made it!" He pulled her into a half-hug and clapped her back, chuckling, a few times. Lurching back, he began to take in the rest of the people who were now studying the newcomer intently. coughing, he saluted. "Sergeant Hu, glad to see you." Turning around, he addressed the rest. "I am Corporal James. In a case like this, however, I don't think rank counts for much, so you all may call me Eugene." he glanced from head to head. "Friends call me Earl. I would like it if you could all call me "Earl". So would you." he smirked at this. looking behind him, he noticed a small pile of weapons. "Well... I guess I'll see to your rubber bullets, and raise you a Browning 9mm pistol. It has no real ammo left..." Looking at his person, he noticed the watch around his wrist, and slipped that in his pocket. "What was that about?" he questioned himself. "It's not like it will ever matter." "I cannot contribute anything but that. I lost all of my supplies helping... someone who cannot join us."
