The Ustians were just over a kilometer away from their base, but they could see they were breaking up. "Oh great!" One of the missile defenders from the bunkers said into the radio. "They're splitting up, trying to surround us I think, how is our defense on the flanks?" "Non-existent! Our firepower is concentrated to wards the front, we won't have much power if we split our forces to cover them. We were going to ask the Halteese to cover them for us." "Dammit! Lieutenant Colonel! What are we gonna do now? Since the General was killed by a sniper, you're in charge now." Kusuma sighed, hearing her cover up had fooled them. "Alright...the Halteese are going to arrive shortly, but they might not make it in time. A bomber squadron...or rather five squadrons are on there way to soften up our enemy. They should be here pretty soon. If their task is done, and the Halteese have not arrived, we'll be forced to split our forces..." "..Copy that...any word from the bombers?" "None..." It was around dusk, by the time a word came from the squadrons. "Field commander, we're almost to your position, these targets you gave us, are they correct?" "Negative." Kusuma replied. "The enemy dispersed. We've been tracking them on radar. We'll update your IFF screen now." A few moments later, the pilot responded. "Copy that. we'll take these targets." He then radioed the other squadrons. "Everyone clear on their targets? Quick squadron check; Wardog!" "Check!" "Edyvean!' "Check!" "Husky!" "Check!" "Avenger!" "Check!" "And Lancer is confirmed as well. We'll split up at nav. point able!" "HOWRAH!!" "It's gonna be like the Fourth of July!" Edyvean's squadron leader announced with pride. "They'll probably give us medals after this."

"Damn, we're not moving fast enough." Townes told his corprol as he nodded in agreement. "The artillary is gonna take a bit longer to get in position too." He said as Townes sighed. "I just hope they can hold them off for an hour longer, it's getting dark..." The darkness could be used to their advantage. The Halteese were well known for their great defense and surprise attacks.

"Alpha?" "Check!" "Beta?" "Check!" "Gamma?" "Check!" "Delta?" "Check!" "Alpha! Eastern defenses?" "None!" "Beta! Southern?" "Nope!" "Gamma! Western?" "Not a thing!" "Ecxelent... Delta... ready?" "And waiting, sir!" Delta was the distraction squad... they will simply confuse the Yukes. Fire phosphorous into the air, scream battle cries, what ever it takes... Alpha, Beta, and Gamma were not exactly attack forces... but close enough... The enterance was not a mile and a half away, but come nightfall, we wouldn't even be within five miles of the camp. "Three inches left! I estimate 20 minutes!" "HOORAH!" "come nightfall, we will sneak around, whilst Gamma squad focuses their attention far and away from us... they will not have anything to guard anything behind them... hopefully

Kusuma lay on her cot, tapping her nails on her spectra armor vest. She was waiting for something; the sounds of the bombs dropping, and the loud explosions. This would not be enough to slow their enemy down, everyone knew that, but this would buy her time, time to devise another defensive strategy to keep them out. Even though her soldiers were very well trained, and she herself was a brilliant commander when forced to defend, the enemy had the advantage of numbers on their side, and a commander who was equally skilled commanding offensively. All in all, the Halteese would be a wild card, tipping the balance of power. "This is Lancer 1." The radio suddenly crackled. "We've reached the nav. points, we're breaking off to our designated areas." a second transmission, or rather several transmissions came in a few minutes after the first; the bombers were dropping their cargo. "Alright boys and girls!" One of the pilots announced. "This is where we earn our wings and our pay! Make us proud!" "Howrah!!" The designated targets were heavy armor, mostly Mammoths and Foxbats, infantry concentrations, and finally, range attackers, such as mortars. These were split among twenty bombers. "Lancer 1, Release!" A call came, which meant that a bomb was dropped. "Lancer 2, Release!" "Lancer 3, Release!" "Lancer 4, Release!" "Copy that, Lancer bombing run complete!" "Edyvean 2 release! "Edyvean 3..." The transmissions slurred together, so it was amazing the air control officer recognized them all. The bombing run completed, the bombers broke off. Each bomb either hit, or came pretty damn close to it's target, and each one made an explosion the size of a three story building, quite possibly leaving craters.

"Sir! The enemy has split and is going to try and pincer the Yukes." A soldier reported to Townes as he nodded. Suddenly enormous explosions were heard as the loud sonic booms of the jets hurt eardrums. Just then the Halteese readied for battle.

"Sir! Alpha Squad! Whadafuck was that!" "Beta hit! OH MY GO- AAHHHHHHHHHHHRR!" "Delta! we are totally incinerated! I think I am the only one left!" Are they bombing us!? "Keep going! This cannot impede us! MOVE FOREWORD!" "Cannot comply. To few people to man armors!" "We cannot advance! Heavy fire!" "How can they see you!?" "Spray and pray, sir! We cannot take the chance!" how did this happen DAMMIT! It was perfect! "Akel! Tell me you can advance! we must keep this alive!" "We can do nothing from our current placement! We are dug in and healing! OH MY GOD! WHAT THE--" I could here the sheer madness on the other side as Akel dropped the radio. "WHAT'S GOING ON! AKEL!" A couple men's voices could be heard, as if of in the distance. "We must! GET OF DAMMIT! FOR THE GLORY OF THE NATION! GREAT USTIO!!!!!" "Sir! they are bombing the machine gun nest. with their sacrifice, we might be able to advance!" phosphorous rained down onto the north wall. "Delta! was that you?" "Jimmy's back, sir!" "Bombard the outer walls! Rain devastation down from the heavens!" "Beta has a bead on the pill boxes, sniping should commence in 3..2..1.." "Alpha squad!" "No casualties! we are dug in healing ourselves! the bombs didn't hit us, but we all received collateral damage!" there just might be some gas left in this thing... "Stop firing! focus on licking your wounds! We will rush when they think we're dead!" from then on, the radio was so flooded that I couldn't think. I don't know what they said, but it sounded full of moral... I should be a public speaker...

"Colonel!" A soldier from the wall yelled, running to her. "Colonel! Colonel!" Kusuma put her arms out to stop him before he collided with her. "Yes? what is it?" He took a moment to catch his breath. "Colonel...the enemy..we can't see them...I think they're gone." The field commander pondered a moment, before speaking. "No...I'm not very confident about that..They wouldn't be wiped out by a few bombs...Maybe they pulled back, and are thinking of another strategy.." "Well, even if that's true ma'am....No general in his right mind would launch a second offensive after something like that. With all do respect, I think we've earned at least a break." Kusuma gave in, wanting a break as much as they did, and put her hand on his shoulder again. "Maybe you're right...bring out the beer..." (There, I post!)

A cease fire... what are they doing... could they really think we withdrew? Are they that stupid? "I must've underestimated the intelligence of the enemy..." I whispered to myself, gazing into the command posts around the interior of the walls. beep! "Alpha, talk to me!" "We are ready and willing." "Pull back. Under heavy cover, pull back to the command burrow, err, room..." Alpha was the only squad I pulled back, I have to leave most of them out there... Calling each squad separately, I drew up a plan. Rather impromptu, but it will do... Allowing a message to flow freely, I voiced a plan to get through the stronghold. "I will spearhead a massive assault at Oh-eight-hundred hours. I need everyone primed for the assault, so get some shut-eye, clear?" Each member of alpha sounded a different "Roger", hopefully different enough to trick them into thinking different squadrons, and right on cue, Ice (as we call the football player sized African man) voiced a concerned question. "Can't the enemy hear us on this channel?" "Nonsense, I doubt they're listening, and even so, I bet they think we're too weak to launch an offensive as it is... it's not like they'll believe this." "Good point, out!"

The crowd chanted cheers while the drinking contest raged, between the First Lieutenant and the Colonel. "WHOO! Go Colonel!" "Come on Logan, you can beat her!!" "Remember! Out drink the Colonel, and we all get a pass on the morning exercises!" An incoherent sentence came from Kusuma, as she and her chair capsized. "YEAH!!!!" "I ish the SHAMPIAN!!" The First Lieutenant raised his bottle triumphantly, before he to fell over intoxicated. "Hey, the first of the Halteese are here finally." "Man! We gotta share the beer with them, too?" (Not really a filler...just a post...)

(shifting gears here) Crickets chirped as dusk fell upon the valley floor. The dew was shimmering in the last rays of day as Lt. O'Malley gazed longingly out the cheap window. "Oi con't weet to go bock home to mey lass..." (generic Irish accent) The man droned, taking a swig of contraband whiskey, completely oblivious to the fact that his shift was over. "thys war made sunse in te beginny, boot oi'm SICK UND TYRED..." "Come on, Keegan, shift's over. You haven't slept a wink in days!" "Oi con't, laddy, not sunse yesturdy..." "Lieutenant Keegan O'Malley! TAKE A DAMN BREAK!" "Yu wunna tussle, loddy!?" "Please man, from a friend, not an officer, take a break. If you stay like this, there won't be much left of ya' by the time we head home." "Oi suppose yur righ', loddy... Um heddin' fur te bunks..." "Thanks, Keeg."

Coming on to total darkness, He had just thought about what Keegan had said. "This is getting a little long... I expected a victory by now... He promised us a victory by now..." He pondered aimlessly. "I wonder what Sherry's doin' right now..."

When Townes got to where the battle had started he was confused. All that sat was a war-torn earth. Him and a couple squads began strolling down the hill to see what was going on. The rest of the army sat in the shadows waiting if Townes' group was to be ambushed.

"Sir! Sir! we have a small group of Halteese light infantry approaching from the south-south-east!" "armaments?" "None other than the basic M-4 and an unknown sub-." "I want you to follow them, but stay off the radar. I don't want them to know we are breathing until they have sprung the trap." "Aye sir!" "Two of you shadow the Halteese, I want one of you to follow me. I need to set up a welcoming mat." The traps were laid out pretty basically. the squad of pathfinders, the Ustian stealth-scouts, relayed the progress of the Halteese to the trap setters. a pungee pit here, a dear trap (the thing that pulls you up by the ankle once you step in the center of the lasso) there, and a falling cage every once in a while, the basic guerrilla warfare, one step ahead of the Halteese. "Lets see'em get past all that!" "Lets."

Kusuma's senior officer surveyed from one of the bunkers, since the Lieutenant Colonel was "incapacitated" at the moment. "Sir!" One of the men reported. "What is it?" "Sir, no sign of movement from the enemy. However, a small force of Halteese soldiers have arrived." The senior officer scratched his chin, pondering the situation. But eventually, he came to a decision. "Let them in..." (Hehee. Filler post.)

(Sad that Nick's trap might lead himself in a trap. Also, though I'll accept it, I have to ask how you'd have the time to make the traps when SOME Yuke soldiers must be on patrol..)
The small convoy made it's way towards the fort when one of the soldiers cried out in startlement as he found himself hanging. The other soldiers looked around curiously. Suddenly a small pop and a splatter as a man hit the floor, instantly dead. The soldiers all made their way for any cover possible only to have a small jeep fall through a pit. The bewildered soldiers all began to fire at their invisible enemies as troops dropped one at a time. Picking up his radio quickly, Townes spoke up. "It has to be snipers, we can't see them where we are. Get our own snipers ready, infared should scope them out." He ordered as an agreement was heard and troops with infared goggles began to scout out, sniper rifle's at the ready, but there was still no sign. Figuring from the firing the Yukes should be getting ready with their own troops. Townes had not known, however, that most of their troops were intoxicated.
(Is this better?)
